Waaagh Waaagh West 2010

Greetings!

The organizers for this years WWW have kicked things into high gear, and things are moving along SMOOTHLY!  There is one problem though: We are not getting very many confirmed sign ups.  There have been a lot of people expressing interest in the event, but few are confirming that they are attending!  This event is NOT hosted by a gaming store, so we have no fall-back should we not get enough entrants to pay for the venue let alone prizes.  Please, contact me at kevin.lavoie@shaw.ca as soon as possible to confirm you are coming.

DOWNLOAD THIS YEARS SCENARIO PACK

While I don't want to raise this spectre, we may have to cancel if we don't get enough people.  I will keep a list of everyone who is signed up on the right hand side, and will announce next week if the event is going on or not.

Starting anew!

Welcome everyone to Sober Dwarf - The Gaming Club!  Tammi and Mitch at K-Max are running the show now, but I'm still around keeping the community going until we leave town... whenever that is!   So, a few things to talk about:

First!  Games night is now on Wednesday Nights at K-Max.  We have a very awesome space to use above K-Max.  The space is being graciously provided by Paulette Ernst, the owner of the K-Max building!  Hopefully this will be our new home for a while!  The space is quiet, private and spacious enough for tons of games!

Second!  The Waaagh Waaagh West tournament for 2010 is still in the planning stages. It has been booked at the Billy Barker Casino Show room for OCTOBER 23-24.  The details are still pending, but we will get as many people in the know as possible, and hopefully we'll have an awesome turn-out! Prices should be similar to last year, but I think everyone can agree from the 'ard Boyz event that the venue is amazing!

Third!  Everyone, if you haven't already done so, please stop by K-Max and take a look at everything that's going on down there!  They are the go-to place for all your Warhammer needs.  You can pre-order or special order anything just like you could at Sober Dwarf, so please help keep games nights going by supporting K-Max with your patronage!

Stay Tuned for more information and commentary!

Glad to be Back!

Th-th-th-that's All Folks!

Well, the time is fast approaching that the Sober Dwarf in the capacity that you know it now will no longer exist!  Its a sad time for Mandy and myself as we prepare to close our doors.  Our last day of official business will be June 24th.  There will be games nights June 14th and June 21st.  Please come down and see us soon, we have tons of great deals on.  If there is anything in the store you've been thinking about, please make us an offer.  All of the Magic Cards, Games Workshop and World of Warcraft stock will be going to K-Max.  They will continue to sell the products locally.

Just so you know, we are not closing the store for any other reason than we may be facing a move related to my work in the near future, and we couldn't have the store holding us back.  If I were to move I would have little notice and I didn't want Mandy to have to close down the store and sell our house while I was away working in the new city.

This blog will keep going, so check in once and awhile!  We'll talk about events and tournaments we'll be hosting for as long as we still live in Quesnel, then we will turn it over to the K-Max crew.  We are still planning to host the Waaagh Waaagh West tournament in September, so keep checking back for details!

It has been a wonderful two years getting to know everyone, and we wish we didn't have to close, but we'll see you all around!

'ard Boyz Information

Location:  Billy Barker Casino Hotel Show Room, Quesnel BC
Date:  Sunday, May 16th, 2010
Time:  First Game Starts at 8:00am sharp.
Prizes:
  1. Battle Force
  2. Medium Box Set
  3. Blister
The top three finishers will also qualify for the Semi-Finals.  The location has yet to be determined for that event.  If you place in the top three and will not be going, please let us know so that your invitiation can be handed to other participants.

The games start so early because we have to vacate the premises by 4pm because their liquor licence kicks in and no minors will be allowed on site.  There are NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINKS allowed, but there should be cheap pop, and there is a restaurant upstairs that you can order food from and it will be delivered to you downstairs.  There is enough room to accommodate 16 players, there are currently 13 registered.

We ask that anyone who is attending our event who has already secured an invitation to the semi-finals please let us know before the games begin.  You are still eligible to win the prizes, but should you place again at our tourney, your invitation to the semi-finals will be handed to the next best finishing player.  This is just to keep things fair, and to enable as many local players as possible to attend the semi-finals.  All rules found on the Games Workshop website regarding the 'ard Boyz 2010 tournament will be in full effect for the duration of the tournament.

I will not be participating in the event as I am hosting it.  I know there are some people who asked if I was playing.

Great White in Prince George will be hosting the tournament on May 15th.  If you play there you are still more than welcome to play at ours as well.  If you are not going to be attending ours because you will be attending that one instead, please let us know ASAP so that we can open your space for another player.

Thanks, and I hope to see lots of familiar faces duking it out to be called 'ard Boyz.

New Blog

Greetings!

Just dropping a note that I'm working on a new Blog that will document my experiences with 'ard Boyz 2010 for 40K.  The site is:  http://ardboyz2010.com/.  I will start by examining my army selection, my composition choices, and I am looking for whatever feedback I can get. I will include videos and pictures as my progress proceeds.  At this point, I haven't even figured out what army I'm going to bring.   I love my Eldar and would love to take them, but a win would be very difficult.  Right now I'm also considering a Space Marine, Space Wolves or Imperial Guard army as choices.  I will buy all the models I need once I've tested the various lists out.  So, follow me on my road to 'ard Boyz 2010!

Northern Alliance Gaming

Just a quick reminder that there is a local events calendar on the Northern Alliance Gaming website.  The link is in the bar on the right.  If you're looking to do something more than just wait around for my tourneys, check it out.  There will be a doubles tournament in Prince George the weekend of March 20 - March 21 @ Great White.  Think about going!

'ard Boyz Update

Greetings!

If you are interested in 'ard Boyz, please let me know ASAP.  I need to book the room and I have to know how big of one I need.  Also, if you're interested, there is a very interesting challenge on the yesthetruthhurts.com website. Stelek is saying that if you take one of his pre-designed army lists to the event and win with it straight through to the finals in Chicago, he will give you an additional army plus other goodies.  Something to think about.  I'm just waiting for him to release his approved Eldar list before I say anything.  I think he's going to want me to have to buy like 10 serpents just to make this thing work, and I doubt I'll be doing that.   But we'll see.

Hope to see everyone at games night on Monday!  Remember, its at 6:00 at St. Andrew's Church in Quesnel.

PDF for Campaign Rules

Here is a link to the Campaign Rules!  Remember, the campaign ends when one player has 10 tiles, and has played each person in the tournament at least once.

http://www.filefactory.com/file/a2h0dg4/n/Sober_Dwarf_Spring_Campaign.pdf

Note: To download, you will have to go to that site, go to the bottom of the page, hit the download with basic, wait 30 seconds and then click on the download button again. Sorry about how hard this is to figure out, I will try and figure out another option soon!

New Winter Campaign

We have a new campaign starting on Monday.  If you wish to participate, please bring with you an idea for a colour that you can paint your flags.  You will be getting a couple of flags and will need to paint them.  The rules will be posted on here come the weekend.  Expect it to be similar, except much fewer tile improvements (ie. bastions etc.) at the beginning, but a way to get more, and a point system for victories which you can spend on said improvements, strategic assets, and even to adjust your die rolls to take over other people's territory.  Should be fun!

Warhammer Fantasy Tournament

Greetings!

This past weekend saw a few brave souls in Quesnel battle it out for WFB supremecy!  Here are the results:

1st.  Nick M. - Chaos Dwarves
2nd. Jon H. - Vampire Counts
Best Sport:  Ryan S. - Skaven

Thanks to everyone who showed up!  Hopefully we'll have another one, perhaps with a smaller unit count soon!

Eldar List

First, I have to tell you, I am not in the slightest a fluffy player.  The fluff that was so prevelent in the previous codex was all but abandoned in the lastest one, and 5th edition and its new array of codexes has forced the Eldar player to abandon anything fluffy to make a competetive list.  Kudos to those who stick with their pure Saim-Hann or Iyanden and try to make it work... a hybrid is where its at though.

Edmonton list last year:

1850 Points - with composition rules:  no more than two selections from fast, heavy, and elite. No special characters.

HQ:  Farseer.  Singing Spear, Runes of Warding, Spirit Stones, Jetbike, Doom, Fortune
Warlocks x 5, Jetbikes, 1 x Enhance, 1 x Embolden, 3 x Destructor

HQ: Farseer. Singing Spear, Runes of Warding, Spirit Stones, Jetbike, Doom, Fortune
Warlocks x 5, Jetbikes, 1 x Enhance, 1 x Embolden, 3 x Destructor

Elite:  Fire Dragons x 5 in Falcon
Elite:  Fire Dragons x 5 in Falcon

Heavy:  Falcon, Holo Fields, Scatter Laser, Spirit Stones
Heavy: Falcon, Holo Fields, Scatter Laser, Spirit Stones

Troops:
Dire Avengers x 7, Dire Avenger Exarch /w 2 Avenger SC in Wave Serpent
Wave Serpent /w TL Bright Lances, Spirit Stones, Star Engines

Eldar Guardian Jetbikes x 6 /w 2 Shuriken Cannons

1841 Points

Obviously this list is not something I would take to an open composition tournament.  Luckily, many people held to this contruction constraint, so the over-all competetive atmosphere of the tourney was toned down.

My councils would go and tie up everything it could, eating vehicles for lunch.  In one game, one of my councils held up 30 space marines in close combat for the ENTIRE game and was still alive at the end. My Dragon squads would each follow a council up the board, and would take out anything big and scary while the council was tying up everything that could retaliate in close combat, so the dragons acted in relative saftey.  The biggest risk with this list was lack of troop choices.  I negated this by placing objectives properly.  I would place one objective on my side of the board which I would secure, if possible, with the guardians on bike, then "help" the other players by putting any of my remaining objectives on their side of the board.  This keeps the enemy on their side of the board becuase that's where the majority of the objectives are... but that's also where my entire army was, so contesting would be easy, and I would hold my one objective and contest all theirs.  In objetive games, you don't win more or better by holding more than one objective, all you need is one, and contest all the others.  In this tournament, I never lost a council.  They were always both alive at the end, and were able to contest or draw people off objectives. Eldar Tanks are the king of contesting as well.  Later in the week I will look at other lists I've brought and won with.

New 'Nids on the Block

I recently played 2 games against the new 'nid codex over the weekend. I have to say that while there are new new set of 'Nids on the Block, Eldar don't really have to be worried. Just bring your "best of" list and it will still do well.

My observations about the Nids, having played them now:

  1. Nid players will no longer line their forces up and start slogging it across the table. They will be in your face first or second turn guaranteed. If you see someone march their bugs across the table, laugh at them all the way to the win.
  2. T6 with 6 wounds is the norm. Get used to it, and get ready to deal with it. The benefit of HAVING to deal with T6 is that whatever you bring to deal with it will also double up as anti-tank, which you can never have too much of.
  3. Genestealers poping out of terrain and eating everything in or around it is scary... the trick is that if you can't fit ALL of the genestealers in the terrain, without being outside of 1 inch away from whoever else might be in there with you, the entire unit dies... so spread out! And don't stay right next to the terrain in hopes of avoiding them because they can move through cover, then fleet then pwn your butt first turn they come in from reserve! People say Genestealers got nerfed... HA HA HA HA HA... these elite ones are what Genestealers should have always been... NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM.... unless of course there are other elites you'd rather not leave at home either.
In about three months, every tourney will be flooded with these guys.  The models are AMAZING, the options are AMAZING, the fun factor of this army went from ho-hum to AMAZING.  The best part is:  Imperial Guard are going to be scared of these guys and will adapt to deal with them, which makes the rest of us VERY VERY happy, becaue the entire game just changed.  'ard Boyz is going to be very interesting this year.

I play Eldar

Most of you probably know that I play Eldar in Warhammer 40K.  I only started playing this game just over a year ago.  The group I played with at the beginning was very competetive and very unforgiving, playing only the power lists.  Since then, I have honed my skills, and now I consider myself a pretty descent player, but only through necessity :)  I have won Best General at the last three tournaments I've played at that had such a position. I am very passionate about my Eldar, but I have been left wondering lately if Eldar are still competetive.  I mean, if you take nothing but the hammer of any army, you can probably do well, and that is what I have done with the Eldar.  Its all Falcons and Seer Councils on bikes for the most part, which while very effective, leaves a lot of the flavour of the Eldar behind.  Where are the Banshees, where are the Scorpions?  When was the last time you saw Warp Spiders?  I have never seen them, and I don't own any.  Last July at a tournament in Edmonton (Out of the Basement), the second most prevelant army there was the Eldar (7 Armies), and I played two other Eldar players during my 6 games.  While no one had an army kitted for the win like mine, it was an odd scene.  The thing about the Eldar, which makes them so appealing, is that there is a "hope" for something unique and interesting in the army, but this last codex combined with the 5th edition rules, has left all of that behind, if you choose to be competetive.  Just my thoughts though.

Tyranid Codex

We should have a real-life, flesh and blood preview copy of the Tyranid Codex in our hot little hands on Friday.  You can either pay Mandy huge sums of money in unmarked bills to hold this most coveted item, or just show up and ask nicely. Everything buggy goes on sale on the 16th of January!!!  If you'd like us to put your name on some of the incoming stuff, please let us know asap or we will not be able to guarantee you any models on the 16th!

So excited to see this stuff!

While I'm not the biggest Ultramarine fan, (well, I am a fan of the tell-tale pop they make when hit by my advanced Eldar weaponry) I am looking forward to this project!  But at the same time, I'm wondering why they haven't gotten their big boy pants on and decided to make a real movie with real people and a real budget, instead of releasing this kind of "relegated to the discount bin a Walmart" kind of stuff.  This is 40K!  Imagine what you could do with the kind of effects and budget of Avatar!?! One could only dream!

North Peace Gamers

Just wanted to drop a line to anyone that might be watching!

Check out http://www.northpeacewargamers.com/ for information on upcoming events in the Peace region.  Also, they have some cool forums for discussion on anything Games Workshop.

There is now a perma-link on the right!

Thanks Mike for the heads up!

Fantasy Army Trouble

Its official... I'm stumped! I have no idea what to bring!  Actually, its a lot more complicated than that.  Not only do I now know what to bring, I hardly know how to play.  Figuring out what is good and what isn't, is next to impossible when you have no frame of reference.  I scoured the internet and I found a list (Skaven) that I could finally wrap my head around.  I modified it, then went to order the models, and low-and-behold but only three of the models were available!  Now WHAT?!?  Anyone who knows me knows that I am a very competetive player, so taking any of the armies that don't have a chance in the tournament scene is not an option.  So no Orcs, Chaos Beastmen, and unfortunately, not Wood Elves (sob).  And I can't play Vampire or Daemons, because they are just not kosher for me.  So that leaves not a lot.  If anyone has any ideas, please drop me a line!
